Laptop Chargers
The advent of laptop computers has transformed the way people do business. Get on a plane to anywhere in the world and you’ll see every businessperson clutching their precious laptops with presentations, market information and that all-important proposal saved on the hard-drive. But the trouble with laptops is the battery. They have a finite battery time (the best only manage up to eight hours or so on a single charge) and if that battery goes flat in the middle of a flight that precious proposal might as well be sitting on your desk back at the office. This is where the latest ‘must have’ piece of technology comes into its own.
Laptop chargers are compact, lightweight and utterly indispensable if you use your laptop on your business travels. The first thing to check if you are using a laptop charger is that it is compatible with your own laptop (certain makes may not be so it is best to check the manufacturer’s specifications). The best chargers have multiple adapters that can fit most connections, but ensure that the charger you select has a selectable power output that will fit most notebook and laptop models. These prevent the batteries from receiving too high a current during charging, which can damage both the battery and the delicate internal workings of the laptop. Incorrect overcharging will considerably shorten the life of any laptop battery.
At the other end of the charger it is important to make sure that, if you are using your charger abroad, it has the correct plug fitting and can cope with the country’s mains electricity supply voltage. The higher end chargers come with ‘smart charging’ capability, which means that An intelligent Laptop/notebook power supply/charger/AC adapter knows the DC voltage you require once the DC connector is fitted and displays it on the LED display. However, high-end technology does not necessarily come with a high-end price tag and the best chargers start at around £25.
Some chargers also have the specific capability of being able to operate on board planes, enabling you plug in your laptop to the plane’s power supply and charge the battery as you work. As well as extending the time you can use your laptop to do some serious work (and avoid having to watch that in-flight movie), it also means that when you arrive at your destination your laptop is fully charged and ready to use.
Other laptop chargers also allow you to plug your laptop into your car via the cigarette lighter. For travelling in the UK and in Europe, this offers an ideal alternative to having to find a mains outlet that your charger will fit and is compatible with your equipment. It also means that you can charge your laptop whilst driving to your next appointment, again making sure that your laptop is ready for that presentation or proposal meeting.
Making sure that your laptop battery is fully charged is an important way of protecting your data from corruption or losing work if the battery fails before you’ve had a chance to hit the ‘save’ button. For such a small outlay financially, a good laptop charger can make your daily business dealings run much more smoothly and the latest generation of chargers are so compact that they’re easy to slip into a pocket or case for use anywhere in the world.
