Different electronic devices have different power requirements. And based on these specific power requirements, different type of batteries are built to suit a specific type of power need.

Just as different types of batteries supply different types of needs of electronic gadgets, there are also different types of technology being used by each of these battery types. They are based on different kinds of chemical principles to produce the power. The elements used for each type of chemical principle are different from one battery type to the next.

Listed below are the most common battery types being used for today’s various electronic gadgets.

NiCd Battery

A NiCd battery is also a type of rechargeable battery. It uses metallic cadmium as negative electrodes. The advantage of NiCd batteries are that they are lighter in weight when compared to their counterparts. It has good charging efficiency and has a small variation in voltage during discharge. They are lower capacity batteries when compared with NiMH batteries. Major area of usage for NiCd batteries are cordless and wireless telephones, emergency lighting, model airplanes, as well as power tools. NiCd batteries are also being used in various electronic devices as well as in electronic toys.

NiMH Battery

A NiMH battery is a type of rechargeable battery that uses hydrogen-absorbing alloy as negative electrodes. These batteries are high capacity batteries if compared to other rechargeable battery types (like NiCd). These batteries are used in all-electric plug-in vehicles, as well as in hybrid vehicles. NiMH technology is used extensively in rechargeable batteries for consumer electronics. Due to their high capacity, long-lasting attribute and easy recharge functions, they are extremely popular among electronic gadgets users.

Li-Ion Battery

This is the most popular and easily identifiable battery type in these gadget-crazy times. One can find these batteries in any or almost every mobile phone being used by people in all parts of the world. A Li-ion battery is a rechargeable battery in which a lithium ion moves between the anode and cathode. During discharge, lithium ion moves from anode to cathode; and from cathode to anode while charging. Due to their high energy efficiency Li-ion batteries are not only being used in electronic devices such as mobile and laptops but also in defense, automotive, and aerospace applications.

Troubleshooting for your laptop battery that would not charge should be done before bringing your laptop to a service center, or buying a new laptop battery. Just follow these instructions below to pinpoint the cause of the problem in charging your laptop batteries.

First, make sure that the problem is not with the laptop charger. Remove the laptop battery from the laptop. Plug in the laptop charger directly into the battery-less laptop and try to see if you can power up the laptop. If it does not power up, and not even a single indicator light turns on, then the problem is with your laptop charger. If you have a voltmeter, test if there is power being produced by the laptop charger. Also, test if the power cord has no breaks along the line, and that power is not disconnected from the power source up to the output plug.

If the problem is not with the laptop charger, then try considering a software problem. Sometimes the problem can be caused by a software-related issue. And the laptop is not reporting the correct status and power charge of the laptop battery. Try to read up on you laptop’s user manual to determine if the problem is not software-related.

If the battery charges but would not complete itself up to its full capacity of 100%, it might just be a problem of calibration. If this is the case, it is necessary for you to drain the power off your laptop battery completely. And you can only do this by turning your laptop power on until it dies off. It would not happen if you have automatic hibernation mode activated when a certain battery level is reached. O to your laptop’s Control Panel first. Then go to Power Management. From there, adjust the setting on when the laptop automatically hibernates. Usually it is set at around 3%-5% so that laptop users won’t lose the information they are working on if the battery dies up while they are still using it. Adjust that setting to zero. And leave the laptop on until the battery is drained. When the battery dies up, recharge it. See if the procedure has recalibrated your laptop battery, and would allow your laptop to be charged to full capacity at 100%.

Sometimes power resetting the laptop solves the battery problem. You can do this by unplugging it and removing the battery. Then hold on the power button of the laptop for one minute. This would make sure that there is no power remaining within the laptop’s motherboard when the battery went down causing the problem in the laptop battery charging. Return the battery and plug the laptop charger and see if the battery charges now.

If the above solutions still do not work, then the problem may be with you laptop battery itself. It is best to replace your laptop battery with the specific battery that is provided by your laptop manufacturer. Contact your laptop dealer and see if they still have stocks of the said battery. Otherwise, you can also order from online shops offering various types and brands of laptop batteries. Just make sure that you get the right kind of battery which fits the specifications of the original laptop battery.

Laptops Are Important

In today’s digital world, the use of laptops, especially for business purposes, has become a practical necessity. Laptops are very mobile and extremely convenient to use and bring along. Laptops allow business people to work while on the road, or while waiting inside the airport. Professionals are always ready to present their materials to prospective client thru the power of the laptop where they store their presentation materials, and even work on them while on the go.

Laptop Chargers Are Important and Indispensable

But just as laptops are important, a vital partner of the laptop has also become increasingly and obviously indispensable. The laptop charger has become an important necessity for every laptop owner nowadays.

Just a single experience of your laptop battery dying up on you in the middle of an important preparation for a presentation material while you are in the middle of nowhere would be enough for you to realize the value of laptop chargers. Or worse, being in the middle of a presentation and you laptop battery’s power empties up on you. Not having a laptop charger in these situations is simply frustrating.

Charger Compatibility with Laptop

And since laptop chargers are important in making sure that you can always use your laptop during emergency situations, it is therefore important that you know how to choose the right type of laptop charger for your laptop.

Universal laptop chargers have multiple adapters that can be used for different types of connections. And even if the connection fits the laptop perfectly, it is extremely important that the right amount of voltage is selected to ensure that the laptop would be charged with the correct voltage properly, and prevent its electronic components from being fried by excess voltage power.

Compatibility with Power Source

On the other end of the laptop charger is another important factor to consider when choosing laptop chargers. The plug fitting that is used to connect to the power outlet is extremely important especially if you plan to use your laptop in other countries where there are different types of power outlets.

Also, the voltage requirement for the laptop charger should be taken into consideration. There are many laptop chargers available nowadays that choose the voltage setting automatically so you do not have to worry if you plug a 220-volt charger into a 110-volt power outlet.

Then, there are the better kinds of laptop chargers where they offer you additional components so that it is possible to plug them into car cigarette lighter outlets and even airplane outlets. These laptop chargers are extremely flexible in the sense that you can charge your laptop practically anywhere that has a power source.

So, when choosing your laptop charger, consider the factors mentioned above to make sure that you are buying the right kind of charger for your laptop. And consider the way you use your laptop, and where you would be bringing it in the future. International travel is a major factor when purchasing laptop chargers that are compatible abroad.

But aside from these, just by making sure that your laptop is adequately charged whenever you would bring it outside to be used is equally important. It is always best to be prepared for whatever circumstances and laptop needs that would arise.

Laptops which are manufactured nowadays are most likely to come with Lithium-Ion batteries. This type of battery suits the typical usage of laptops where frequent charging occurs even if the battery has not been fully discharged yet. However, this is not to say that laptop users can use and abuse the Lithium-Ion batteries of their laptops. Proper care for laptop batteries should still be observed.

Below are a few tips on proper laptop battery care.

When you purchase your laptop, the battery that comes with it is usually empty. Charge the laptop battery as long as possible before using it. It is advisable to plug in the laptop without using it for at least 4 hours

It is advisable to keep or store your laptop battery in a cool and dry place. Heat hastens the deterioration of battery life. But this does not necessarily mean that you should store your laptop battery inside the refrigerator or freezer as this can also deteriorate the quality of your laptop battery.

When using your laptop at home where you have easy access to a power outlet, remove your laptop’s battery while using it. Use the power of the AC adapter for your laptop. Using your laptop while charging it should be avoided if possible for it will contribute to the overall deterioration of battery life.

It is not advisable to buy a back-up battery if your purpose is to prolong the battery life of your batteries. Lithium-Ion batteries have a functional lifetime whether you use it or not. You can only prolong its life up to a certain level through proper care. But using two laptop batteries alternately will prove to have shorter combined life compared to purchasing the second laptop battery when the first one is already showing signs of deterioration.

Do not always wait for the laptop battery to fully discharge before recharging it. You may be confusing the laptop battery with another battery type (Ni-Cd) where a complete charge-and-discharge cycle is needed to prolong its life. When your laptop charge falls to 10%-15%, you can already charge your laptop battery

The optimal level of leaving you laptop with a charge is at 40%-60%. Studies have proven that batteries normally left with this amount of charge have longer battery lives. Charging your batteries fully-charged all the time before storing it is not exactly optimal for battery life. Of course, you should take into consideration your foreseeable immediate usage when charging batteries. If you know that you shall be using you laptop on batteries the following day, the normal thing to do is to fully-charge it to avoid batteries getting drained while you still need to use it.

Allow your laptop battery to fully discharge when you notice that it is not calibrating correctly. When you notice that the battery life being rated by your laptop does not represent an accurate estimate of the actual power remaining within your laptop battery, just do one complete discharge up to the point where the battery is fully drained. Then recharge it fully before using it.

Just try to follow the above tips for laptop battery care and it can help prolong the life of your laptop battery.

Battery Disposal Is A Serious Matter

Did you know that if you live in California, it is illegal to dispose of your batteries in your normal everyday trash?

Yes, that is how serious this matter is. Disposing of your batteries is an extremely important matter that various groups are now pushing for stricter laws on disposing matters which can be harmful to the environment.

Millions and millions of batteries are manufactures each and every year. In the United States alone, around 3 billion batteries are sold each year. And with the booming economy of countries such as China, with the corresponding demand for power supplies to power the millions of gadgets being bought by their increasing consumer population, this figure is only expected to grow every year. Batteries run electronic gadgets like laptops, cellphones, flashlights, and numerous electronic toys. And with the growing popularity of everything becoming mobile and wireless, the tendency to provide power to these devices in mobile cells can be expected to increase in use.

Harmful Elements From Batteries

The problem is that some batteries contain metals such as cadmium, mercury, lead and nickel that can seriously damage the environment through contamination if not disposed properly. Incinerating them would not actually solve the disposal problem properly as the ash which becomes the remnant of the burning still contains the metals. And the burning process can also release some harmful elements into the air. Batteries can also explode when it comes into contact with fire or exposed to extreme heat.

Organization To Help You Dispose Your Battery

Thankfully, there are various groups who care enough in helping individuals dispose their batteries properly. Sites like earth911.org can help you locate the nearest recycling and disposal stations in your area. Just enter in your zip code in the website’s interface and you will be provided a list of all the places where you can bring your batteries (and other recyclable material) to be disposed of.

Battery manufacturers also have their own disposal facilities where you can bring your batteries for disposal. Call the phone number printed in the product packaging, or visit the company’s website to know the details. Some cities and municipalities also have their separate depots where you can dispose your batteries. Just give your local government a call to find out.

Buy The Right Kinds Of Batteries

But aside from this, there are other things that people can do to help in preserving the environment and protecting it from the harmful effects of chemicals from these batteries. We can all start by buying the right kinds of batteries in the first place. Buy alkaline batteries which can be disposed together with your other household garbage simply because the chemicals found in alkaline batteries do not pose a threat to the environment. Or better yet, buy rechargeable batteries. They would even prove to be economically wise for you as a battery user since you can use a rechargeable battery over and over just by recharging it.

Technology should help us all move forward without destroying the environment in which we live in. Let us all do our share in protecting our environment. And we can start by doing the simple things like disposing our batteries properly.

So, you probably got here looking for a solution to your problem with your laptop that won’t boot up. Before bringing it to the repair center which would definitely cost you some money, why don’t you consider troubleshooting the problem first and try to see if you can fix you laptop’s problem in booting.

Here are a few things that you might want to check up to know if you really need to bring your laptop to the repair center.

Check the AC Adapter

When you plug in you laptop’s AC adapter, you should see the LED light up. It is usually yellow or red when it is charging the laptop’s battery, or green when it is fully charged or running on AC power.

If the LED is not lit up, and the laptop does not show any sign of starting to boot up when you push on the power button, you should check if your AC power adapter is functioning properly.

If you have a voltmeter, test if the AC adapter that you are using for your laptop is producing the right voltage output, or if it is even producing power at all from its output plug. You would know the correct voltage needed for your laptop to function based on your laptop’s manual. If you cannot find the manual, look for it printed in the laptop itself. It can usually be found at the bottom part where the other product specifications are located.

At this point, It may also be worth to try removing the laptop’s battery and unplugging the AC adapter and leaving the laptop powerless for 1-2 minutes. Then try booting up you laptop again.

If the AC adapter is producing power but not in the right voltage, unplug the AC adapter from the power outlet immediately and stop using it. You may damage your laptop if you continue to use that AC adapter with the wrong power output on your laptop. If you have a universal AC adapter, try to see if it can supply the correct power output to your laptop. Usually, it can. And you are in luck if you try plugging in you universal AC adapter with the correct voltage option and the laptop boots up.

Check the Monitor

Assuming that there is no problem with your power adapter, and the laptop powers up when you turn on the laptop, but just would not continue booting up, and there is no image appearing at the laptop’s monitor, you would have to start checking on other things.

If you have a desktop computer, use the desktop’s monitor in checking you laptop’s video output. Your laptop usually has its port for an external monitor located at the back. Connect your external monitor and verify if you can now see your laptop booting up on the screen of the external monitor.

If the external monitor show that your laptop is ok, then the problem is with you laptop’s computer monitor. Bring your laptop to a service center as fixing your laptop’s monitor already requires opening up the insides of your laptop which might void you warranty if you do it yourself.

Check the Memory Chips

Usually, laptops have at least two memory slots. What you should do is remove the memory chips and install it back. (Refer to your laptop’s manual to locate your laptop’s memory slots and how install the memory chips.) If you have two memory chips, try using only one and try installing it in either of the slots. See if it works. If not, try it on the other slot. If it still does not work, try the other memory chip and do the same. You would have to pinpoint the problem by process of elimination. It could be one of the two memory chips. Or it could be one of the two memory slots. Or worse, it can also be a combination of the four factors. See if trying out the different combinations would solve your laptop’s boot up problem.

If the problem is a faulty memory chip, don’t use that memory chip or buy a new one. If the problem is with one of the memory slots, do not use that memory slot or replace you laptop’s motherboard.

Check the Hard Drive

If you can power up your laptop but it just would not continue booting up, and instead, you hear a repetitive clicking sound or grinding noise coming from the inside, the problem may be traced to your laptop’s hard drive.

If you are capable of removing your laptop’s hard drive, let the laptop boot up without the hard drive. Listen if the clicking or grinding noise disappears. If it does, then our hard drive must be damaged. Replace your hard drive with a functioning one.

Or if you can run diagnostic tests on your hard drive using a hard drive test utility and see if the problem can still be solved.

If the above solutions are still not enough to pinpoint the problem of your laptop, then it might already be time to bring it to a laptop repair center.

It has never been easier and cheaper to take up photography as a hobby than today. Although the initial costs of purchasing a camera has risen up, the overall expenses of buying the traditional films and developing costs has now been replaced with cheaper processing costs due to digital photography. And in addition to the reduced processing costs, the usage of rechargeable camera batteries in today’s cameras have significantly reduced the costs of continuously operation your camera. With the rising popularity of digital photography, proper rechargeable camera battery care must be learned by these photography enthusiasts to be able to get the most out of their equipment.

Today’s digital cameras are powered by typical rechargeable camera batteries. This is opposed to using special batteries supplied by the manufacturer that is used specifically only for that device. This is a big advantage as consumers now have to option to search for cheaper alternatives for their camera batteries.

From the very start, it is extremely important that users follow the recommended initial charging of the batteries stated in the manufacturer’s operating manual. We all know how hard this can be especially if you are just itching to try out the new digital toy that you just bought. But this is where discipline can ensure a longer life for your rechargeable camera battery.

Today’s digital cameras usually come with Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries. Lithium Ion batteries are the most popular and easily identifiable battery type in modern electronically hyped world. This type of battery does not require that the user fully discharge the battery before charging it once again. This is typically referred to as the “memory effect”, which is not applicable for Li-Ion batteries. This means that the users can use and recharge these batteries anytime they want.

On the operation side of the digital camera, there are a number of ways that one can prolong battery life. And one very practical tip that you can follow is to adjust the power-saving setting of your digital camera. Your digital camera’s LCD screen eats up a lot of power when displaying images. If you can shorten the amount of time that the images are displayed every time you take a shot, then that is one way to extend your battery’s life.

Also, if you have a DSLR as your camera, you may opt not to use the LCD screen when taking pictures. Since most DSLP users prefer peeking thru the optical viewfinder, it shall save you a lot of battery power if you turn off the electronic viewfinder or LCD display when taking shots.

When you are not going to use your digital camera for a long period of time, it is advisable to remove it from the digital camera and store it safely in a storage that is not exposed to humidity and high temperature. This can also improve your rechargeable camera battery’s life.

And lastly, buy and replace batteries in whole batches. For example, if your digital camera uses 4 AAA batteries to operate, and you sense that battery life is slowly deteriorating that it is already time to replace them with new rechargeable camera batteries, replace all four of them at the same time. Do not make it a habit to replace just two of them, hoping that the two new ones can pull the remaining power from the two old ones. This would just effectively shorten battery life even for the new rechargeable camera batteries that you just bought. And your camera’s usage time would not improve as expected with the new rechargeable camera batteries.

These are just a few tips on how you should take care of your rechargeable camera batteries to maximize the power that you can get from them. Extending your rechargeable camera battery’s life can certainly add up to the cost savings you can get from digital photography.

Car power inverters are becoming more popular these days with the proliferation of all these electronic devices. Car power inverters are the devices which convert DC power from car batteries into AC power ready to be used by ordinary electronic or electrical gadgets. Just plug these car power inverters into the cigarette lighter plug outlet, and voila! – you already have ready-to-use AC power inside your car.

Electronic gadgets are usually powered by AC power cords. And this prevents these gadgets to be used directly when mobile inside a car, or any moving vehicle, as the only source of power is the cigarette lighter plug. Thus, the solution of having a car power inverter comes in handy for someone wanting to use these electronic devices inside his car. And these car power inverters are convenient enough to fit into your car’s glove compartment.

Imagine being able to use your laptop, printer, scanner, television, and any other gadget that you wish to use while traveling inside your car. That’s practically having a fully-functional mobile office for you. You can even charge all of your cellphones, iPod, camera batteries, and other rechargeable items inside your car while on the move, without you having to purchase separate car chargers for each one of them. That would certainly be a lot of savings for you when you compute it.

Types of Car Power Inverters

Car power inverters come in different built and sizes. The cheaper models are usually housed inside plastic cases and have no cooling fans built into them. While you may usually save some money buying these cheaper models, it may prove more expensive in the long run as these car power inverters may easily break down on you. The absence of a built-in cooling fan may result in your car power inverter to overheat, especially during often extended use. And with the normal wear-and-tear, plus the average temperature corrosion, plastic casings become a bit too brittle over time. And this may result in your car power inverter’s casing becoming too brittle and to break up easily once you accidentally drop it. Therefore, it is more advisable to purchase longer-lasting car power inverter housed in metal casings.

Aside from these external factors, car power adapters also vary in the power output that they provide. The more common ones which can be readily plugged into the cigarette light plug outlet are usually capable of powering up to 100 watts. Depending on which types of electronic equipment you are planning to use, this may already suffice your needs. But should you require a heftier load due to the number and kind of gadgets you intend to use, there are some car power inverters that can supply up to 3,000 watts of power. And these usually come with 4 or more AC outlets so that you can use your gadgets all at the same time.

There are also some car power inverters that give its users the option to directly hook them up to car batteries, as opposed to the usual plugging into lighter plug outlets. This type of car power adapter allows more flexibility in its use as you can use it inside your howm during power failures. You don’t have to start your car to be able to use it. Just pull out your battery, or use an extra car battery, if you have one, connect your car power inverter to the battery, and you have instant AC power for your electrical household appliances.

Choosing the Right Car Power Inverter for You

When choosing the proper car power inverter, you should first take into consideration your needs. What are the devices that you plan to use a car power inverter on? Look into the power consumption specifications of these electrical gadgets and take note of their power consumption in watts. This is usually stated in its printed specification. If it is not, follow this simple formula to compute a gadget’s power consumption in wattage.

watts = amp x volts

After taking note of the devices you intend to plug into a car power inverter, identify which ones require the highest amount of power. This is where you shall base the capacity of the car power inverter that you shall need. Of course, this is assuming that you shall only be plugging in only one gadget at a time into your car power inverter. If you intend to use more than one equipment at a time, add them all up according to how you shall use them. And that shall be the required capacity you shall need from your car power inverter.

When choosing which car power inverter to buy, the features stated above should also be considered. Especially if you inted to use the car power inverter as emergency power source during power outages, the hook-directly-into-battery feature may be the one you should look for.

But whatever kind of car power inverter that you would require for your needs, a car power inverter is definitely a wise investment for any mobile person who travels most of the time. With a car power inverter, you can add to the functionality of your car while multiplying your very own productivity.

Note: Add a universal AC adapter into your car power inverter and take advantage of the great savings, plus ultimate flexibility when powering up your electronic devices. With a unveirsal power adapter and a car power inverter, you do not need to carry around all of those power cords, power adapters, and car chargers all the time. Simplify your electronic life. Minimize clutter. Maximize functionality.

A universal AC adapter may be one of the most important investments an electronics consumer can ever purchase. The use of the universal AC adapter cannot be simply ignored in view of the increasing electronic items being sold in the market with varied power source plugs.

Take stock of all the electronic gadgets and equipments that you have in your household. These include your laptops, printers, scanners, cellphones, music players, gaming consoles, among others. Then compare that number with the number of AC adapters that you use for those electronic equipments. Chances are that each electronic equipment that you have has a corresponding AC adaptor that you need to be able to operate that device. Now, ask yourself: how many among these electronic devices have interchangeable AC adaptors?

AC adaptors vary in size and shape. And more importantly, they vary in the voltage that they produce. And sometimes, even if two AC adapters produce the same amount of voltage, you still cannot use them interchangeably with other electronic gadgets requiring the same voltage simply because different shapes and sizes of plugs are required by the different electronic devices.

And how many times have you gone to travel thinking that you brought all the necessary adapters for all the electronic devices you are using in your trip, only to find out that you made a mistake bringing the wrong AC adapter for your laptop. So what you might probably do when your laptop runs out of battery power would be to run to the nearest electronics shop and buy the necessary power cord for you laptop. Such an unnecessary expense, isn’t it?

If only you had one universal AC adapter that you could use interchangeably with these devices of yours, then you would not have to go through all of those trouble..

Universal AC adapters solve the problems of having to carry around multiple power cords for your electronic gadgets if you are not really going to use all of them at the same time. Universal AC adapters would also minimize your expenses whenever you lose or damage an AC adapter for one of your gadgets since you do not have to buy an another AC adapter that shall be exclusively used for that gadget. Universal AC adapters are easy to operate since changing the plugs and voltage according to your needs are very simple.

If you do not have a universal AC adapter yet, what are you still waiting for? Don’t wait for the need to arise when you desperately need to retrieve a file from your laptop only to realize that you cannot power on your laptop since you lost your power plug. And you cannot use the power cord from your other laptop because their power voltage specifications do not match. A universal AC adapter would have been a simple solution to your problem.

Invest in a universal AC adapter. You’ll never know when one of those AC adapters that you have for one of your electronic devices would breakdown on you and leave you helpless. And a universal AC adapter is relatively cheap when you compare it to all the advantages and benefits it can bring to your numerous electronic devices. A universal AC adapter is a very simple device that can make your life in the 21st century a lot easier and convenient.
